Video Challenge – Day 2: The Self & The Self-Image

(If you can’t see the video, click through to the post, or check out the YouTube video)

While there are many reasons for why personal change can be difficult, in this video I look at a major obstacle to personal transformation.

I’m still finding the camera intimidating, and I tend to be very rigid when I speak about personal growth (even offline, actually). But I’m finding my lack of facial expressions (even when saying a joke!) amusing… That adds to the humor, I guess. 😛

Hope you get to enjoy this video, and your feedback about the presentation and the content is always welcome.

So speak your mind, below! 😀

heh, so this is actually fun!

Positive Characteristics:
– Learn on my own
– Help others with the knowledge i have, both online and offline
– Dont care what people think of what im doing as long as it’s right

Negative Characteristics:
– Have problems with priorities! I end up putting computers (computers, not internet) above everything else, even if the other thing is extremely necessary (ie my family and my studies)!
– Have a very short temper
– A lot of people have said that I am not good when it comes to dealing/socializing with other people, they find me rude :/

That’s all i can think of at the moment! I’ll be waiting for the next video impatiently 😀

You raise a very useful distinction between “self” and “self image” Haider. I have lots of self-image descriptions . Some are “long term” such as, I’m a mom, an American, a writer. Others vary from day to day: I’m smart, not so smart, happy, creative, blocked, like to be with people, like to spend time alone. I know these are not who I really am, though sometimes I forget! It’s so easy to get caught up in the drama of self image.

BTW you did smile just a little at the end. Keep going, I can tell this is going to be a good series.

AnxiousNut, thank you for your participation, and I’m happy to hear you’re enjoying the process! 😀

Linda, very thoughtful observations. I’ll be dealing with “long term” associations in a future video (after this challenge), because it’s an extremely important topic, and is a cause for so many divisions and conflicts in the world. We identify with our ethnicity, nationality, lineage, religion, etc. that we end of disconnecting from those who don’t share the same identity.

I’m glad I slipped that smile in at the end. I suspect it came naturally from the relief of having finished the video. 😛

#1 you really do speak the same way you write
#2 people who don’t know you would never realize you cracked a joke in that video (99.999999%) :p

You asked about characteristics and I am sad to say that 5 minutes have passed and I have yet to figure out what are my characteristics -_-

Thanks for the feedback, Laila!

My aunt tells me that my jokes are usually implicit (even in my writings). If there was a *bit* of a facial expression, people would notice the joke. But now I’m worried I’ll be quoted about that study! 😛

And don’t worry about the characteristics. It may not be such a bad thing that you don’t label yourself. Check the 3rd video for the reason!

A study you “just made up” 😛
Sometimes you feel there are two copies of you, the only that is inside and the one that usually comes out. Most of the times they don’t match!!!
For example, when constantly you’re being mean to someone, even if you’re not a mean person in nature, but something about that person brings that out in you. So does that make it your character or a conditional character 😛 -I just made that up!- hehehe
I usually point out my -ve characteristics because those I want to change and let others point out my +ve characteristics because those that come out are the ones that count.
Some of my bad ones:
moody, socially challenged, temper, sometimes I care what others think, bad healthy life style, bad time management, indecisive … OK I’m going to stop here, I’m depressing myself 😛

Bloggylife, “just made up”? What are you talking about? I don’t recall saying such a thing!

*Twiddling thumbs and looking innocent*

I think all personality characteristics – conditional or otherwise – can be changed. We don’t have to identify with them, especially when there’s an alternative we wish to pursue.
